Updated May 2017What's a "prototype...?"
The prototypes below are design concepts, each of which may have excellent merit for further development. Several of these prototypes or 'concept' designs were originally created as preliminary design studies for various clients in order to address their differing requests. Others are ideas for new designs.
Please see our Prototypes Introduction page for a complete answer to the above question... And see below for the boats themselves... Please note that new designs are added as they are developed and design updates are always being made. Both new designs and updated designs are flagged with the symbol so please check in periodically...!
Mono-hull Prototypes From 22' to 164'
Peregrine 164 - A motor yacht with an Asian flavor. The hull form is actually based on a US type, the sharpie. However there is a distinctly Asian quality to the type if used as the basis for a large multi-level motor yacht. Many options for the interior layout include a luxury owner's suite on the top deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
50 Meter KLM - At 164' on deck, could this be the ultimate charter vessel...? We think so. This is a larger version of our traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' series - which literally means 'boat-sail-machine' or motor sailor. Five or six extreme luxury suites below plus two ultra-luxe suites on the Bridge Deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
40 Meter KLM - An Indonesian Pinisi / KLM at 132' on deck. At this length, the double deck is very much into its element. A traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' in appearance - a luxury charter vessel in function - a robustly built wooden vessel in structure. Four high luxury suites below plus one or two grand suites on the Bridge Deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Jeanne V 130 - A large and comfortable all-ocean motor yacht for global voyaging and adventure. Having a rounded metal hull, this design offers extraordinary seaworthiness in a classic motor yacht that will never go out of fashion. Functional, as well as beautiful. The upper deck is large enough to carry a helicopter or sea-plane. With a vessel of this size, there are quite a number of interior layout possibilities. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
37m Peri Laut (121') - A dive charter yacht for SE Asia and beyond. Luxury accommodations for 16 dive guests, served by 16 crew. Construction is intended to use a steel hull combined with a wood house. Alternately all can be built in fiberglass with a wood surface on the house and throughout the interior. Other interior options are possible, including fewer but more luxurious guest cabins. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Motor Cargo Yacht 120 - A steel yacht able to carry around 45 tons of cargo to pay its way. A luxury cabin for charter guests to pay the fuel bill..! Highly seaworthy and very seakindly. A unique sort of adventure, wholly deductible! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Amazon 100' - Conceived as a medical supply vessel, but quite adaptable to a low profile yacht or tour boat, especially well suited to shoal water and low overhead clearance of river systems and canals of the world. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Peregrine 82 - A long and sleek motor-yacht with aft pilot house. An extended version of our 64' Peregrine prototype, well suited to all-ocean cruising, or the canals and rivers of the world. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Fantail Steamer 80 - A classic fantail motor yacht harking back to the days of the early steam yachts. An all-ocean classic having a generous interior for entertaining, and cruising accommodations for a couple with four guests. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Johnny B Good 80 - An 80' steel trawler yacht. Heavy displacement for maximum comfort and maximum interior space for accommodations. The hull form is similar to that of an offshore supply vessel, with the superstructure of a yacht. It is a good combination...! Interior accommodations are very generous - even for an extended family. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Nautilus 80 & Nemo 70 - A little something from our fantasy wish list... A hybrid submarine-yacht, i.e. a sub, complete with mother ship...! The combination when mated is intended for long range. When the sub is deployed, both ships are entirely autonomous. Wild...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Ocean Express 70 - A semi-planing aluminum cruiser that makes use of an interior layout similar to the Vagrant 49 below, but with much larger staterooms. A unique flying bridge is planned as a second helm, and for open air dining. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Express Cruiser 60 - 70 - A 60' - 70' sleek and fast all aluminum Express Cruiser. The idea with this one has been to achieve an economical fast semi-displacement cruiser. A low profile is desirable for cruising the canals of Europe and to allow minimum beam for the sake of efficiency. The speed potential is considerable...! Two cabin configurations are described, and several other interior layouts are possible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Nordic Spirit 64 - All aluminum or steel hull with aluminum superstructure. As with the Nordic Spirit 50, this larger prototype was developed as a revision of the 75 foot Free Spirit. The Nordic Spirit 64 has much more generous space in each location, and has three staterooms forward. The larger size makes possible a variety of saloon / galley arrangements. Both of these are classic trawler types in the Baltic tradition. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Braveheart 63 - Designed for Steel hull and Aluminum house structures, or for all aluminum. Motor sailing capabilities, with an interior and exterior layout very similar to the Greatheart 60 design, but having an integral swim-step aft. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Steamer 60 - A truly classic motor yacht. Low and sleek with a plumb bow and fantail stern... just like a classic steam yacht. The interior layout is ample for a couple and friends, and the main deck accommodations are perfect for summer indoor-outdoor living. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Peregrine 60 - Metal, wood or composite construction. The assignment here has been to create a traditional looking power voyager that would "fit in" while sitting in any port of the world. Maximum economy of construction and powering were the main goals. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Euro Express 55 - A fast semi-planing motor yacht for the Mediterranean... A flying bridge that still allows full access to the EU canal system... Two luxury double berth cabins... 20 to 22 knots on tap. Robust aluminum structure. Full Category A EU compliance... Good..! (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Greatheart 54 - Steel or Aluminum. Set up for a family with two children or a couple with guests. Walk in engine room, office / workroom, two heads, one with a bathtub! A private owner's stateroom aft and guest or kid's stateroom forward. Excellent layout for privacy! (Preliminary Drawing & Specification Available here.)
Braveheart 53 - Designed for Steel hull and Aluminum house structures, or for all aluminum. Created for a family with children or a couple with guests. Large engine room with below-decks passage between fore and aft cabins, large saloon / dining area, office / workroom, two heads, one with a bathtub! A private owner's stateroom aft and guest or kid's stateroom forward. Excellent layout for privacy! (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Nordic Spirit 50 - Originally planned for aluminum construction, but GRP also easily done. As with the Nordic Spirit 64 this prototype was developed as a revision of the 75 foot Free Spirit. For the 50 footer, the priority was to fit into a 50 foot slip...! Layout drawings are shown for the 50' version. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Amazon 50 - A shoal draft steel river-boat that would be equally at home on the Amazon as on the Danube or the US Intracoastal Waterway. Sort of like a houseboat, but capable of a jaunt offshore when needed. The perfect live-aboard...? Very possibly! (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Double Eagle 49 - A displacement steel or aluminum passage making yacht. Two equal size sleeping cabins, either of which could be called the 'master' suite. This concept design makes use of the same layout as the Rhumb Runner above, but uses a displacement hull form in order to allow building in steel. Houses are low for maximum flexibility of travel in the various canal systems, and also for maximum sea keeping. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Black Jack 49 - Another in the Rhumb Runner / Double Eagle series, this time using a unique hull form derived from a sailing Skipjack..! Low house structure, and equal double cabins - ideal for two couples to share cruising and / or ownership... (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Rhumb Runner 48 - A sleek and fast all aluminum cruiser. Two equal size sleeping cabins. The intent of this design has been to fit the maximum accommodations into a fast semi-displacement cruiser under 50 feet LOA. Additionally, the requirement for excellent sea keeping has encouraged keeping the profile quite low. Height to the top of the Pilot House is under 11 feet, so the canals of Europe would be a good possibility. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available please inquire.)
Coast Runner 48 - An aluminum cruiser having the same hull form as the 48' Rhumb Runner, combined with an expanded interior layout similar to that of the 40' Coaster. Still Euro Canal friendly in terms of height, plus a fast semi-planing hull. (Preliminary design Study & Layout available please inquire.)
Roberta Jean 47 - Another robust ocean trawler in Aluminum. The interior layout was inspired by the Greatheart 48, but with a different hull form to allow a longer waterline and more interior space. Two complete staterooms for family cruising... (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Nomad 45 - A steel or aluminum trawler yacht that combines the hull form of our Petrel 43 and Gannet 45 designs, with the house structure of our Vagabond 50 design. A large owner's suite forward with a walkaround island berth, a guest cabin / office, and a large all-in-one galley / saloon / pilot house for on-deck living with an all-around view. A great combination we think. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Gannet 45 - An aluminum trawler yacht in the tradition of our Coaster 40, and Petrel designs. A flying bridge, pilot house dining, and spacious saloon. A large owner's suite forward, with an ample guest cabin / office. We like this layout quite a lot...! (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Far Horizon 43 - A stout all-ocean trawler intended for steel or aluminum construction. The interior is similar to the Greatheart 48, but on a slightly shorter overall length. The idea here is to achieve an interior layout ideally suited to a couple with two children, or a couple with guests. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Petrel 43 - A widebody dive yacht for worldwide travel. Access to the water is easy via the built-in aft swim deck. A widebody interior provides ample space so that two can live aboard, and in order to accommodate another couple as guests on various dive adventures. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Boojum 43 - A robust ocean trawler in Aluminum, sharing the same WL length and displacement and exactly the same interior layout as the Greatheart 48, but having a different hull form to wrap around it. The idea is to have a true ocean going trawler which would fit a modest slip size, a modest budget, a reasonable four cylinder diesel engine size, and to make use of sail as "get-home" auxiliary power. Two complete staterooms for family cruising... (Preliminary design Study & Layout available; please inquire.)
Far Horizon 40 - Another excellent design in the Far Horizon series... Here we have a robust all-ocean trawler yacht with live-aboard comfort for a couple and occasional guests. (Preliminary design information available please inquire.)
Blue Horizon 36 - A fantail stern steel trawler yacht with a layout identical to that on our Greatheart 36 design. A fantail stern is the perfect end to a steel boat! Very pretty! Outstanding sea keeping is assured by a low profile and an extremely seaworthy hull form. The canals of Europe...? No problem, the low profile is well within the Freycinet height limit. Aluminum construction equally possible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Vagabond 36 - A 'pocket trawler yacht' in aluminum. Designed for coastwise and ocean cruising for two in comfort. A large pilot house / lounge and ample accommodations. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Wave Runner 36 - A sleek and trailerable, yet ultimately seaworthy aluminum cruiser. A fast semi-displacement hull form provides a wide variety of powering options, depending on the desired top speed. Excellent sea keeping is provided by a low profile, also allowing access through the canals of Europe. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Big Ferdinand 35 - A larger version of the Ferdinand 24, allowing a private stateroom forward, and the option of having a large open saloon aft. A second stateroom is possible and the layout below is actually quite flexible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Skimmer 32 - A small cozy pocket trawler in aluminum, capable of semi-displacement speeds as well as long range voyaging at displacement speeds. A double berth aft, and twin berths forward for guests, plus a pilot house to contain the galley and dinette. Two cabins on 32 feet... indeed. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Talisker 32 - Steel, aluminum or wood. With the hull form our very fine Terrier 32, and the excellent interior layout of our Boojum 30, the Talisker 32 has taken shape. In this case, with slightly more room in the hull, the interior is much more relaxed. Aft there is even enough room for a King size double berth..! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Sweet Okole 30 - Although intended for aluminum construction, this little trawler would be equally well suited for plywood or fiberglass construction. Narrow beam allows the ability to be trailered. A 'midship bridge deck on a 30 footer...? Well yes it certainly can be done and very elegantly too, thus the name...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Ferdinand 24 - This tiny all aluminum trawler was created as a concept for a round the world "race" of sorts, called the "Magellan Challenge" so the name "Ferdinand" was a natural. The rules began with a limit of 22 feet LOA, space for two, the ability to be trailered, and the requirement that the boat be as simple as possible to build. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Boojum 22 - A Trailerable Tug Yacht having bilge keels, both for ease of trailering and for taking the ground without any fuss. Hull construction in aluminum. Wood or fiberglass also possible. Study Drawings & Estimating Plans available; please inquire.
Whisper 20 - An electric launch for day trips or overnight camping. Trailerable, robust, safe and unsinkable.... Nice..! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
Pumpkin Seed 18 - A small trailerable tug-launch. Open cockpit and cuddy cabin for the ultimate in simplicity and comfortable camping on the water. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
50' Wave Cat - Click for Larger ImagePower Multi-hulls
'Tunnel CAT' 90 - A unique type of very fast planing vessel - the 'Tunnel CAT.' This type can be foil borne, with a dramatic increase in speed and efficiency. Modern styling and a number of interior layout options. Intended for aluminum or GRP construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
'Troika' 80 - Power Trimaran - An efficient and seaworthy power trimaran, with an on-deck pilot house enclosing an ample saloon and galley. The most efficient hull form is always a long, slender shape with easy lines. Thus it is natural to consider a trimaran, where the center hull can be light, long and slender in order to minimize wave-making resistance at speed. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
'Nautilus' 80 & 'Nemo' 70 - A little something from our fantasy wish list... A hybrid submarine-yacht, i.e. a sub, complete with mother ship...! The combination when mated is intended for long range. When the sub is deployed, both ships are entirely autonomous. Wild...! (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
'Penny Wise' 60 - Power Trimaran - A power trimaran for aluminum, or plywood, or GRP construction... An interesting design study! The original request was for a power tri with "traditional" styling. This is so-far a sketch of an idea only, but one which I believe may have considerable merit for long range cruising under power. Efficient passagemaking...? Indeed. (Preliminary design information & Study Drawing available; please inquire.)
'Fast Cat' 50 - A unique type of fast planing power boat. Essentially a monohull with a tunnel down the middle, i.e. a tunnel-hull catamaran... Intended for aluminum construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
'Wave Cat' 50 - Shown in the image above, Wave Cat is a fast semi-planing power catamaran. Intended for aluminum or GRP construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
