What's a "prototype...?"

The prototypes below are design concepts, each of which has excellent merit for further development. Several of these prototypes were originally created as preliminary design studies for various clients in order to address their differing requests. Others are our own ideas for new designs.

Please see our Prototypes Introduction page for a complete answer to the above question... And see below for the boats themselves...

Please also note that new designs are added as they are developed and are flagged with the symbol New..! so please check in periodically...!

Sailing Mono-hull Prototypes From 28' to 182'

55 Meter Sailing Junk New..! -  At 182' on deck and having full displacement, this vessel is really quite big.  This design is styled somewhat after our traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' series, however there are also styling queues taken from traditional Chinese junks.  The construction in this case is intended to be all steel, primarily to achieve a vastly lighter and stronger structure as compared to wood.  Numerous luxury suites throughout, two ultra-deluxe suites on the Bridge Deck, a gym, a recording studio, Jacuzzi, library, gourmet galley, and a car-garage..!  Wow. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

50 Meter KLM  -  At 164' on deck, could this be the ultimate charter vessel...?  We think so.  This is a larger version of our traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' series - which literally means 'boat-sail-machine' or motor sailor.  Five or six extreme luxury suites below plus two ultra-luxe suites on the Bridge Deck. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Shadow Line 135 - A 42 meter (135' on deck) plank-on-frame wooden Barquentine in the tradition of the 19th century privateers...!  This vessel is planned for the Youth Sail Training Foundation which intends to operate the vessel for the benefit of youths at risk in California.  There are accommodations for 32 youth-trainees plus four counselors and four deck hands forward, and for 10 officers aft.  The structure will be per the Germanischer Lloyd's rules for wooden ships. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

40 Meter KLM  -    An Indonesian Phinisi / KLM at 132' on deck.  At this length, the double deck is very much into its element.  A traditional Indonesian 'kapal layar mesin' in appearance - a luxury charter vessel in function - a robustly built wooden vessel in structure.  Four high luxury suites below plus one or two grand suites on the Bridge Deck. This design is intended to have excellent sailing capability.  To achieve this, the keel has greater depth, and there is a three-mast sail rig provided.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

38m Blackbeard -  A 38 meter (125') sailing yacht in wood, which harks back to classic Privateers such as the Swift, but with a focus on improving performance. The interior is intended as a yacht, therefore a galley and saloon are amidships, crew is forward, and the owner's cabins and guest cabins are located aft.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

37m Chief Seattle  New..! - A 37 meter (120') classic sailing yacht modeled after the Grand Banks fishing schooners of the early part of the 20th century.  The specific inspiration was the highly successful racing-fishing schooner Bluenose build in 1920 in Halifax at the height of commercial sail.  In this case, hull, deck and all spars are intended to be built in aluminum. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Leah 112  -  Leah is a sleek, modern sailing yacht in all respects, intended for fast but comfortable all-ocean sailing.  Aluminum construction; twin fin keels with ballast bulbs; twin rudders; three masts; fully battened sails; etc.  The ultimate luxury charter vessel or private yacht.  Two crew cabins, two large luxury guest suites, one enormous owner's stateroom, and un-crowded accommodations throughout.  Impressive!   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Bermuda 100  New..! -  A 100' on deck 'modern classic' wooden yacht for fast all-ocean sailing.  The hull is modeled after the fast sailing Skipjacks of the US East Coast, but with the hull and rig refined for ocean sailing.  As compared to the inshore Skipjack types of yore, the Bermuda 100 is less wide, has more freeboard, and carries a simpler and easier rig to handle short-handed. The classic single chine hull form is ideal for steel or aluminum construction.  For the simplest wooden structure, a rounded hull shape could be introduced.  Though originally planned for a centerboard, the keel could be modified to eliminate the CB, but still not gain overall depth.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Cargo Skipjack 100  New..! - A 100' live-aboard motor-sailing cargo-yacht.  A flexible concept, allowing use of the cargo hold as a modular charter cabin.  Optimized for carrying cargo or for part-time charter use, the focus is on motoring comfort, and sailing grace.  Simple construction, easy maintenance, fast sailing...  yet another fine prototype in our Skipjack series.   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

25m Lady Destiny  New..! - An expeditionary sailing junk in steel, intended for an extended family of 8 people, or for luxury charters.  Taking queues from the Indonesian traditions for the hull, and the Chinese traditions for the sail rig.  A robust sailing ship for worldwide exploration.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Pathaway 78  New..!  - A fantail charter schooner somewhat in the clipper ship tradition.  Classic gaff schooner or brigantine rig.  Rounded yet easily plated steel hull - a real beauty..!  Planned with four double cabins for charter guests, a lounge on deck, six crew.  The perfect size to stay within the rules for smaller charter vessels. Alternate interiors..?  Why not, it is large enough..!  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Caribe 73A series of classic fast sailing charter yachts in aluminum, intended for the shoal waters of the Caribbean.  The 73' version has a dedicated owner's cabin, separate crew quarters, a walk-in engine room, a large galley and three private staterooms for guests.  Excellent renderings can be viewed at the link given here. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Arabian Dhow 70  New..!  -  A traditional "Baghala" type of Arabian Dhow arranged as a private yacht with two guest staterooms.  Lateen or Chinese Junk rig.   Wood plank-on-frame structure or cold moulded structure.   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Peregrine-on-Thames 70  New..! -  An extremely shoal draft sailing "barge" somewhat along the lines of the classic Thames Sailing Barges, but built in aluminum or steel, and having a fantail stern. It is often said that there is no substitute for length when it comes to creating a generous living space. I believe this to be true. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Rachel 65  New..! -  Rachel is a sleek, modern sailing yacht intended for fast, comfortable all-ocean sailing.  Aluminum construction; fin keel with ballast bulb; fully battened ketch rig.  Owner's suite aft, guest suites forward, large saloon and pilot house.  Rachel would make an outstanding charter vessel or private yacht.   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Privateer 62  - A classic privateer-style schooner for construction in plank-on-frame wood.  Shallow draft for the Bahamas. With well protected pilot house and ample engine horsepower the Privateer is also a fully capable motor-sailor.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Jasper 60  -  A 60' Trading Schooner, with modular hold area to allow a variety of uses, whether for cargo, traveling hospital, charter, studio or whatever can earn a living on location.  Steel or aluminum hull, deck and house for ruggedness and simplicity.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Josephine 55  -  Very close in hull form to the schooner Lucille, but stretched to 55' on deck - and also quite similar to the larger Caribe series above.  Check it out...!  Now this is what a schooner should look like... at least in my view...!  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Wylde Pathaway 55 - Steel or Aluminum. Wylde Pathaway was the name of my grandfather's brother. Joseph Conrad himself would fall for this excellent schooner, the larger sister to Lucille and Abshire having an added stateroom/office amidships. A sister ship to Wylde Pathaway has been developed as a ketch, named Shiraz, in aluminum.  (Preliminary design information & Study Sketch available; please inquire.)

Skipjack 51 -  Modeled after the fast sailing Skipjacks of the Chesapeake, but less wide and with more freeboard for offshore sailing. Simple and classic chine hull form, ideal for steel or aluminum construction. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Zeb 45 to 60  - Two prototype aluminum sailing yachts, one a 45' sloop and the other a 60' ketch, each having a fin / bulb keel and skeg hung rudder for fast ocean sailing whether on or off the wind.  Radius chine for a rounded appearance.  Sugar scoop transom for easy access from the water.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Sonja 50  - A flush deck ketch with a fin / bulb keel and skeg hung rudder for fast ocean sailing.  A strong and seaworthy classic design, equally at home on a circumnavigation or sailing in the islands...  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Abshire 50 - Essentially the same as the 50' schooner Lucille, but with a single chine hull for the sake of economy in building and with aluminum for the hull structure. A few excellent images available here... As with Lucille, a pilot house could be easily added amidships, or the vessel could be left as a classic sailing yacht with open decks.  (Preliminary design information & Study Sketch available; please inquire.)

Spray 48 New..! -  What is it about Joshua Slocum's Spray...?  This concept design re-visits the Original 36' 9" Spray to assess the qualities inherent in the design, then to see what might be done, if anything, to improve the design for modern sailing...    (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Awahnee III 48 New..! - An adaptation of the slightly larger Uffa Fox designed Awahnee I and Awahnee II sailed by Bob Griffith and family on three circumnavigations.  Planned for construction in steel with a Bermuda cutter rig for the sake of ruggedness and simplicity.  Spacious accommodations for a couple plus two to four guests for passage making.   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Hiawatha 48 New..! -  An aluminum ketch with a hull form in the tradition of the fast sailing Grand Banks schooners.  The interior is planned for comfortable cruising and living aboard for two, with up to four guests.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Grace 43 - A transom stern single chine steel cutter, modeled after the 42' Zephyr and Highland Lass, but with a cruising fin keel, spade rudder and high aspect rig for very competent windward sailing.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Raven 43 - A fantail stern single chine boat in the channel pilot cutter tradition. A pilot house aft, and plenty of room below. Seven feet of headroom...! Raven is designed primarily as an auxiliary sailing vessel, easily configured as a motor sailor.  Aluminum spars, cutter rig. Hull construction in steel or aluminum.   If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Jasper 41  -  A motor-sailing ketch for comfortable cruising whether on the ocean or on inland waters.  A pilot house, plus generous sleeping accommodations.  A transom stern combined with a fairly upright bow profile yield a nice long waterline on a relatively shorter hull.  The concept here has been to keep the overall length under 42 feet, but to maximize the interior volume for the sake of the interior accommodations.  Comfortable living aboard for two, plus sleeping for four guests when needed.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

China Cat 38 New..! - A capable offshore centerboard yacht in a classic package.  A fantail stern, flush deck type of cabin, and outstanding stability range.  Plenty of interior room, and worldwide access to waters over 4 feet in depth.  The perfect liveaboard yacht...?  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Fantail 33  - Similar to the 36' Grace, however smaller, and with considerably lighter displacement, for construction in aluminum. Two keel configurations offered: full keel, or fin / skeg combination.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Grace 32  -  A small cutter intended for aluminum, plywood or fiberglass.  Essentially a smaller sister to the excellent 36' Grace, having a graceful counter stern.  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Pilgrim 30 & 32  New..! -  A 30' cutter intended for aluminum, plywood or fiberglass, and a 32' cutter also allowing construction in steel.  A fantail stern is the perfect way to end a single chine hull form.  The cutter rig is the ultimate in simplicity.   (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Ernest Shackelton 30 New..!-  A rescue vessel...!  Intended to be the ultimate trailerable and floatable home in the event of natural or unnatural disasters.  Capable of many things, including being a temporary or even a permanent home...  Simple structure for affordability, and ultimate safety in terms of seaworthiness...  These have been our goals, and they have been well met...!  (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)

Bedouin 28 - Aluminum bilge keel yacht, the big sister to Sarah Cat. Trailerable and ocean worthy.  (Preliminary design information & Study Sketch available; please inquire.

Sailing Multi-hulls

Gemini 60 New..! - Gemini is a fast sailing catamaran intended for fiberglass or aluminum construction. A catamaran is ideally suited for two couples, each of whom can have identical accommodations...! Several images are on the Gemini page, plus a good description of the interior. (Preliminary design information available; please inquire.)
